The task force is just a couple of months old, but Harris says it has already investigated and prosecuted credit card theft using scanners, blackmail by way of social media and counterfeiting using the internet.
HARRIS: "We discovered 300 boxes of counterfeit jewelry that had been shipped into the Unites States and California from China. The retail value of this seized property is $1.5 million. And we know that this is but one type of what we call copyright theft…"
The 20 new members of the task force were transferred from other departments within the attorney general's office.
However, the Attorney General is losing 123 investigators and staff in her Narcotics Enforcement, Investigations, and Intelligence bureaus because of budget cuts announced by Governor Jerry Brown.
