A diverse and jubilant set of student marching bands led the crowd.

They weaved through the streets between South Sacramento and the convention center downtown.

Some marchers had labored breath and chilly toes.

Other clapped their hands, or held someone else's.

Young people came out in droves. Waverly Kemp led a group of them.

KEMP: "As we're walking these six miles, it's always a struggle. And our feet may hurt and we may get tired, but we have to keep on going, we have to keep on honoring Dr. King's legacy."

One theme of this year's festivities was "education."
Carl McLaney carried a sign for Black Advocates in State Service.

MCLANEY: "As much as we can create opportunities for young people to get a good education, and for people to have decent-waged jobs and you know for people to have justice in their communities altogether. Dr. King made the point that as long as someone's at the bottom, we all suffer."

Each mile of the march had its own theme - from unity to celebration.

(sound of people singing "happy birthday")
