Popular Museum Day Offers Wide Variety Including a Slice of Sacramento History

Twenty-six Sacramento area museums will open their doors for free admission Saturday,  including The Discovery Museum, the Railroad Museum and the Crocker Art Museum.  The 14th Annual Museum Day also includes less obvious sites like the California Pharmacy Museum and the Museum of Medical History.

"Another one that might be seen as unusual is the City Cemetery," says Museum Day co-ordinator Delta Mellow.

"It's the largest outdoor museum that we have.  It's full of history and art and culture, all about the history of Sacramento itself.  Plus it has beautiful gardens.  It's a wonderful place to go to.  And that's considered a museum as well."

Last year more than a hundred thousand visitors took advantage of the free event, and that caused traffic problems at Fairytale Town and the Sacramento Zoo.

This year, those two venues will offer half-price instead of free admission.
