Field Poll Shows Unprecedented Support for Same Sex Marriage

The Field Poll says 59-percent of the state's registered voters approve of allowing same-sex couples to marry.  Thirty-four percent disapprove.
The survey's directors say this level of support is the highest it's ever been in the organization's history of polling on the issue.   In 1977, when the Field Poll first measured views on the subject,  the results were flipped-59-percent disapproved of same sex marriage and 28-percent were in favor.
The current survey found support for gay marriage all over the state and from a number of different groups including the young and middle aged and from those affiliated with different religions and those with no religious preference. Majorities opposed to the idea include Republicans and political conservatives.
The survey was conducted in early February.
