Jim Morris with the California Rice Commission says rice farmers are hopeful the rain will continue. Farmers are still waiting to find out how much water the State Water Project will provide.
MORRIS: "Some of the deliveries remain to be seen depending on what lies ahead with the weather. There has been some potential for cutbacks for farms including those growing rice in the Sacramento Valley, but that has largely yet to be determined.
Morris says farmers have done a couple of things to minimize their consumption of water. They use lasers to level their fields more precisely which reduces runoff. They also grow a shorter variety of plants.
Last year, growers produced more than 5 billion pounds of rice after a late start to the growing season.
