Forty-one-year-old James Hooker recently quit his job as a high school teacher in Modesto after saying he was in a relationship with one of his students, Jordan Powers.  Since both say their physical relationship didn't begin until after Jordan turned 18, it's not illegal in California.  Jordan's mother, Tammie Powers, says that's not right.

POWERS2A: "I had no legal recourse whatsoever with an 18-year-old.  And I believe this teacher pursued her."

So she's backing a Republican Assembly bill that would make an inappropriate relationship between a high school teacher and an 18-year-old student a felony.  Those relationships are already illegal if a student is under 18.  The bill would also make "inappropriate communications" a felony - such as excessive or sexual text messages.
