The University of Pacific and many of its female athletes are celebrating the school's new membership in the West Coast Conference.
Ted Leland is the school's Athletic Director. He says the school will have to start a capital campaign to upgrade its basketball and volleyball facilities.
LELAND: "We need to have, make sure that those two sports are competitive at the National level. That's the aspiration of this conference we're joining. That has to be our aspiration here and that takes a certain amount of support."
Leland says the challenge is to bring the school and community closer.
LELAND: "We have to be an important part of the social consciousness of the entertainment options of this town. The way I would say it to you is, we need to fill Spanos Arena. If we don't fill it, some of the people coming to town will.
The school will add men's and women's soccer to its list of scholarship programs, and might add softball to be its sixth women's sport.
Neither UOP nor The West Coast Conference has football.
