Salmon Season Forecast Above Average

The Pacific Fishery Management Council says the recreational season will start Saturday for the Sacramento region and the commercial season will start May first.

Jim Milbury with the National Fisheries Service says the huge returns expected this year are largely the result of ocean conditions in 2009.

MILBURY:  "You figure these salmon that are going to be coming back left three or four years ago and went out into the ocean at that point.  And, it's at that time that they had to have enough food to eat."

The fall run in Sacramento is forecast at almost 820,000.  That is more than six times the number needed for optimum spawning.

The forecast for the Klamath River is the highest since 1985.
