The good news is, the numbers are getting better.

In 2010, Sacramento was the worst large city in the state for traffic-related injuries and deaths.   Chris Cochran with the Office of Traffic Safety says that's the fifth year in a row and budget cuts can't be blamed.

COCHRAN: "This trend actually started before budgets began going bad, so there's something out there culturally that needs to be figured out."

Sacramento was in the top-five in eight different collision categories and number one for the most speed-related and alcohol-related crashes.

But compared to 2006, the numbers are actually an improvement.  Alcohol-related crashes dropped by a third and the total number of crashes dropped by nearly a quarter.
