Robert "Bob" Paris, a 16 year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, was killed by bullets that came through a door at the multi-family dwelling in the Chyrsler neighborhood of Modesto.
The 53-year-old officer had volunteered to work in the civil division, delivering legal documents, often times to people who didn't want to receive them.
Sheriff Adam Christianson became emotional when informing the media that one of his men and an accompanying civilian had been killed.
Christianson later described Deputy Paris as an officer who loved serving the community.
The officer is survived by his parents, a brother and two adult
children. Funeral arrangements are pending.
