Davis Police Lieutenant Paul Doroshov says problems with Picnic Day are primarily alcohol-related.

"There's a lot of drinking that goes on."

Last year, police made about half-a-dozen arrests and issued more than 130 alcohol-related citations…

"There's a lot of great family events on campus. But some people see this as a day to really let loose and party."

To discourage that "Mardi Gras mentality" Doroshov says police officers will be out in force. Doroshov says he's encouraged that fraternity and sorority leaders have signed a covenant to help reduce unruly behavior at this year's Picnic Day.

Student Matt Chernin heads the campus' Interfraternity Council:

"There have been some negative stereotypes really associated with Greek life and we just really want to demonstrate that we're doing our part to really ensure that Picnic Day will be fun and safe for everybody."

Among other things, Greek leaders have pledged to refrain from drinking games and from serving alcohol before noon.
