For the people who try to keep mosquito populations down in the Sacramento area, this promises to be a bad week - with showers likely over the next few days, then heating up over the weekend.

"That's like the perfect storm - having the water and the warm temperatures, that creates the ideal breeding conditions, especially this late in the season."

Luz Maria Rodriguez is with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District.

She says people can help cut down mosquito multiplication by removing any water that accumulates in their yards.

"If there's no water for them to lay their eggs in, then that goes a long way in controlling mosquitoes. When people ask us 'what kind of a mosquito season are you expecting' or 'are you going to be spraying' right now it's still too early to tell."

Rodriguez says any spraying will be based on the amount of West Nile Virus activity in the region.

The first case for the 2012 season came two months ago when a dead house finch found in North Sacramento County tested positive for the disease.
