Denim Day is a worldwide event protesting a 1999 legal ruling against a victim of sexual assault…
"…an Italian Supreme Court decision overturning a rape conviction because the victim had been wearing snug-fitting jeans."
Louise Czopek is with PEACE for Families, a rape crisis center in Auburn. The agency and the Placer County DA's Office are promoting Denim Day in the region.
Czopek says they're still fighting the myth that sexual assault is provoked by a victim' s attire or actions.
Last year, PEACE for Families helped 139 sexual assault victims, a slight increase from the previous year.
"You have to remember, those are the ones that actually came forward. So victims face tremendous obstacles. It takes a great deal of courage to report having been sexually assaulted."
Denim Day is part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Victims' Rights Week.
