Sacramento Jobless Rate Falls In April

State analysts say the Sacramento area traditionally sees a decrease in the jobless rate between March and April…

"…although this month's decrease is twice the average."

That's Justin Wehner with the state Employment Development Department. He says they don't know specifically why that is...

"…I mean it could be a variety of different things. It could be people retiring; people who stop looking for work...."

Total wage and salary jobs in the region grew by 4,200 in the past month, 700 more than usual, mostly in: "leisure and hospitality;" "food services;" "agriculture" and "construction."

Year-over-year, the Sacramento area lost 100 jobs…which Wehner says is considered flat.

"…that's what's interesting because we haven't been in the position of being even with last year or close to positive territory since the second half of 2007."

Sectors with the biggest month-over-month job losses in April include: "repair and maintenance;" "laundry services;" and "religious and social advocacy."
