Members of VFW post 8358 fired three rifle shots to mark the day during a ceremony outside Pioneer House.

It's an assisted living facility where 20 WWII veterans reside.

VFW Commander Freeman Lee says honoring America's fallen service members doesn't require a huge investment of money or time.

LEE  "What is important is making sure the sacrifices of our nation's sons and daughters are not forgotten"

Lee says a recent poll shows only 28 percent of Americans know the real meaning of Memorial Day… most view it as a day off.

Boy Scout Troop 259 raised the flag to half staff in honor of those who died defending the country.
