Elk Grove Mayor James Cooper said during a recent City Council meeting he's already heard from a lot of people about potentially allowing a 50 foot tall sign off Highway 99 on Sheldon Road.  

"I've had a lot of emails, a lot of phone calls and a lot of text messages. I've talked to Mr. Moore. I think his project's great. The sign's the issue."

That sign is being proposed by local developer Gil Moore who wants to put in a fast food restaurant, gas station and other retail at the corner of Sheldon and East Stockton Boulevard.

"In order to entice my vendors, McDonald's and the gas company, to come out there, I need off-sight signage..."

…which would require changing the city ordinance prohibiting large signs along freeways. An idea City Councilwoman Sophia Scherman isn't happy about.

"I'm not prepared to amend our sign ordinance. I think 50 feet is too tall."

But before the council moves forward, the city wants to hear from the public.
