Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg says the areas of
disagreement include the governor's proposed cuts to welfare, child
care, in-home supportive services and college financial aid.
Steinberg: "If you look at CalWORKs,
you look at IHSS, you look at CalGrants and you look at child care,
adds up to about $2 billion."
The potential cuts to in-home services brought hundreds of
care workers and their clients to a rally outside the
Capitol. Union leader Gail Ennis:
Ennis: "So you know why we're here,
right? Once again, we're targeted, right?"
Crowd: "Yeah!"
Ennis: "Aren't you sick of
it?"
Crowd: "Yeah!"
This really is crunch time for all sides. A deal is
expected by next Friday's legislative budget deadline.
