The state's unemployment rate in May was 10.8%, essentially unchanged from April when it was 10.9%.

The state Employment Development Department says California employers added 33,900 payroll jobs in May. That's welcome news after a very disappointing April, when the state only gained a 4,400 jobs.

Most industries saw month-over-month gains, including: mining and logging, construction, manufacturing and health services. Leisure-and-hospitality posted the largest increase, adding 13,200 jobs.

Two sectors reported the largest declines: trade-transportation-and-utilities and government.

Last month's unemployment rate of 10.8% was more than a full percentage point better than the 11.9% unemployment rate in May of 2011.
