Legislature Passes Budget; Brown Spokesman: "Still Not There Yet"

The votes were mostly along party lines, with a few Democrats voting no.  Senate Budget Chair Mark Leno blasted GOP lawmakers for their unwillingness to support taxes.
 
"Balancing the budget is second-grade arithmetic - addition and subtraction," said Leno.  "We can't do our job honestly without addition."

Republicans criticized not only the content of the spending plan - for a lack of permanent cuts - but also the last-minute process used to pass it.  "This budget is a slow-motion train wreck - and you're driving the bus, " said Senator Tom Berryhill."

But the budget work isn't done.  Democrats still haven't reached a deal with Governor Jerry Brown.  Asked to react to this spending plan, Brown's press secretary said: "We're not there yet."
