There used to be a time when most people would shop for music at a brick-and-mortar store…and Tower Records was one of the globe's biggest retail chains.

"Here was something that started here in Sacramento and had a worldwide impact."

Dylan McDonald is with the Center for Sacramento History which is helping to organize the Tower Records Project.

Tower's founder - Russ Solomon - has already donated more than 200 boxes of Tower-related memorabilia.

"What's missing, what we need to add to tell this full story is 'who are the people that worked there, who are the people that shopped there?' We know that they have stories about what their Tower experience was and we'd like to capture and preserve that."

McDonald says the goal of the project is to raise enough money to preserve Solomon's donation and make it publicly available by creating a touring exhibit starting at the Sacramento History Museum.

"We hope to have the first unveiling of this exhibit there at that museum down in Old Sacramento and from there it travel across the country."

The campaign hopes to raise $300,000 by the end of September.
