The City's Department of Transportation says only a portion of the first floor  of the station is currently useable.  Councilman Steve Cohn spoke at an event celebrating word of the grant.  Cohn says the City will match the federal funds to make the rest of the first floor, and parts of the second and third floors useable.

COHN: "What this is going to do is allow us just to make that look the way it should -a historic building- and make good use of it for people who not only passengers but from people throughout the city."

The renovation is part of phase two for the Railyards development north of the Amtrak Station.

City staff can't say now exactly how the money would be used.  But, the City has previously said the building needs heating, air conditioning, elevators, stairs, and restrooms.  It was built in 1926.

Renovations are scheduled to start next summer.
