Under a proposal that was scheduled to go before the Sacramento City Council Tuesday, all businesses and residences would receive a fine after the third false alarm in a year's time.

But, the agenda item was pulled from consideration when the acting fire marshal, Ed Bassett was alerted to discrepancies between the number of false alarms he has and the numbers in the report that was to go before the council.

Bassett says there are about 3400 false alarms each year.  The proposal before the council could be read to say the number was 8700.

Bassett says the department's proposal includes fines for residential property but those fines are half of what they are for businesses, "It doesn't happen very often with residential structures.  Most people call and say, 'Hey, I burned toast and it's not necessary for you to come over."

If approved, fines would reach $360 for businesses and $180 for private residences with an administrative penalty added after the sixth offense.

The item is expected to be re-introduced later.
