Today is the first day back for students in the San Juan Unified School District. Trent Allen is with the district. He says state budget cuts have led to some changes this year.

"There (are) a lot of folks who are deciding to retire. So you're going to see a lot of new principals, a lot of new teachers. And then the other thing that students and families will see is - we're going to have fewer school days this year. Our first furlough day for San Juan will be August 31st. What would have been traditionally a school day is now a non-school day because of the budget reductions."

Allen says the district could potentially have 11 furlough days this year - depending on final state funding and whether or not voters approve Governor Jerry Brown's tax initiative in November.

San Juan is starting school this year a week earlier than usual. Allen says it's because they want high school students to finish semester finals before the winter break.

"Traditionally, our calendar has had that break be over December so that students then have to come back in January and go right into their finals period. So we're hoping this will boost performance a little bit on some of those finals and then let people enjoy their breaks a little bit more."

Meanwhile, classes resumed earlier this week for kids in the Folsom-Cordova and Natomas Unified school districts.

Kids who go to schools in the Sacramento City Unified School District, however, will have a few more weeks of summer vacation. The district starts classes the day after Labor Day.
