The bill comes in the wake of news reports earlier this year where students felt pressured to divulge their Facebook user names and passwords. The resulting outrage quickly led to legislation, such as this bill from Democratic State Senator Leland Yee:
Yee: "It will prevent universities' and colleges' admissions officers from asking this information so there is not any debate, there's not any undue influence on our students to turn over this information that will access their private data."
The unanimous vote in the Senate sends the bill to Governor Jerry Brown. A second measure that would apply the same ban to employers is also expected to pass the legislature in the coming days.
