Two people have died this year from West Nile in California…and nationwide, the number of cases is three-times higher than usual.
"This year just happens to be one of the worst outbreaks that we've seen and it's mainly been concentrated in six states with the majority of the cases coming from Texas."
Luz Maria Rodriguez is with the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and
Vector Control District. She says the mild winter, early spring and
hot summer helped spur mosquito breeding.
In Sacramento County, the district has already conducted two
aerial treatments over the past two months. Tonight, aerial
treatments will begin over Woodland in Yolo County. Rodriguez says
that's unusual.
"We have not done any aerial spraying to control
mosquitoes in Yolo County for a few years because most of the
activity has been concentrated in Sacramento County."
In Yolo County, more than 40 dead birds and one horse have
tested positive for West Nile.
