Chris Healy with the Nevada Department of Wildlife says so far this year they haven't received many calls about bears.
"We were expecting a big bear year of nuisance bears wandering towards Reno and Carson City and Gardnerville and of course up in the Lake Tahoe basin because of the dry conditions."
The dry winter has left fewer herbs, nuts and berries for the
bears to eat. So their next source of food will likely be people's
garbage cans.
That hasn't happened so much yet…but Healy says the bears will
soon be ramping up their food intake to get ready for winter
hibernation.
"I think it's going to be a very active September, October
and November around here dealing with that. We're going to see a
lot of black bears searching out, trying to find food."
Besides garbage, other things that can attract bears are
compost piles, bird feeders, pet food, fruit trees and barbeque
grills.
