The study comes from UC Berkeley's Center for Labor Research and
Education and was written by researcher Miranda Dietz. She says
it's expected that temporary jobs offer less job security…
"..but I was surprised to find that hourly wages were so
much lower for temporary workers. Temps make about 18% less per
hour than comparable non-temps."
That includes people working in both blue and white collar
jobs...like landscaping, housekeeping, nursing, accounting and
computer programming.
"One of the consequences is these workers are more likely
to rely on the state's safety net - workers receiving food stamps
or being on Medicaid, it's about twice as high."
Dietz says the disparity should worry everyone because the
reliance of temp workers on state aid worsens already serious state
budget problems.
