The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the riot started at about 11:15 in the morning.
Twelve inmates were stabbed or slashed in the riot. The Department of Corrections says officers tried non-lethal force to break it up, but also fired multiple rounds from a rifle. One prisoner was shot.
The injured were taken to either local trauma or intensive care units.
Sac Metro Fire responded to the first call of a riot and shooting -15 minutes after it started. The department sent at least a dozen ambulances.
New Folsom's official name is the California State Prison-Sacramento. It was built in 1986 and holds more than 2600 inmates. The Department of Corrections says many are classified maximum security.
