The Secretary of State's office says 544,000 Californians have at least tried to register to vote online in the first month after the program became available. That doesn't mean they all succeeded. County elections departments check to make sure applicants are eligible - and that they aren't already registered - before approving applications. And they're not all new voters - Californians can update their registrations online if, for example, they're changing their addresses or political parties.
The system opened last month under a law Governor Jerry Brown signed last year. The law's author, Democratic Senator Leland Yee, says in the 31 counties that have reported results to a political data firm, more than a quarter of online applicants are under 26 years old.
The voter registration deadline - be it online or an old-fashioned way - is Monday.
