If you have a fireplace, you'll need to see what the daily wood burning forecast is before lighting up a log…the same applies if you have an indoor or outdoor wood stove, fire pit or insert that burns wood, pellets and other materials. It's the law…
"The consequences are a $50 fine to start with or the first-time violator has the option to complete and pass a wood smoke awareness course."
Lori Kobza is with the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management
District. The agency will provide daily wood burning messages
about any restrictions covering Sacramento County.
Forecasts for the Central Valley will come from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control
District.
Kobza explains - wood burning is the main source of fine
particulate matter in the area.
"Fine particle pollution is very hazardous to your health.
Everyone who breathes it will feel health effects they just might
not always understand that that's what they're feeling."
The annual "Check Before You Burn" season lasts from November
to February.
