A groundbreaking ceremony will be held tomorrow for the construction project. The $22.5 million facelift is intended to move cars through the interchange more quickly…and people not in cars more safely.

"That's one of the unique things of the interchange project is the pedestrian and bicycle pathway through the interchange."

John Jaeger is with the Sacramento County Department of Transportation. He says the pedestrian and bicycle pathway will go through the interchange via under-crossings…away from traffic.

Jaeger says another major part of the project is widening the existing Watt Avenue overcrossing to add more lanes…including one dedicated to buses.

"Currently there (are) merge and weave issues at the interchange which causes backups onto the freeway and onto Watt Avenue. So it basically is providing just a better operating condition of the freeway interchange."

The county awarded the project to contractor O.C. Jones and Sons. It's expected to be finished by the summer of 2014.
