Senator Mark Leno was the first openly-gay state Senator.

He also authored California's first bills that would have given same-sex couples the freedom to marry.

He says until the Supreme Court rules on Prop 8, gay rights advocates are just going to have to be patient.

LENO:"The drama and the suspense continues but we remain confident that there will be equal marriage rights in California."

John O'Conner with the gay rights group "Equality California" had this reaction.

O'Conner: "It's disappointment that loving same sex couples in California continue to be denied marriage equality but it's also respect for the process in that our case, meaning the case for marriage equality, will be given a fair hearing."

The 9th U-S Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Prop 8 on grounds that it stripped individuals of rights already granted when same-sex marriages were approved.

But Proponents of Prop 8 are pleased with the decision. Andy Pugno is General Counsel for ProtectMarriage.com, the original proponents of Prop 8.

Pugno: "We know that this is something that we've been looking forward to for almost four years now, since this case first started that ultimately our goal was to reach the Supreme Court and now we've done that and look forward to getting to argue the case before them."

Arguments in the Supreme Court could come this spring with a decision in June. SOC
