The California Highway Patrol joined Stockton police in patrolling city streets in November as violent crime and homicides hit record levels.
The joint operation appears to have been successful.
Stockton police officer Joe Silva says more than 2,000 traffic stops were made and almost 70 firearms seized.
SILVA: "During these stops we seized basically a gun a night, and made several high profile felony arrests."
Stockton saw a record 71 homicides in 2012.
But Silva says in the last 3 months the numbers have declined.
SILVA: "In November we had 6, December we had 4, and so far in 2013 we've had zero."
The program is scheduled to end officially February 1st.
But based on its success, the city will ask the governor for an extension.
