Assemblymember Dan Logue says he wants to protect the private information of California concealed weapons permit holders and applicants.

He says the bill he's introduced is in response to a New York newspaper's public disclosure of names and addresses of gun owners.

The paper obtained the information through Freedom of Information Act requests.

Logue says the paper went too far. And his bill would protect women from stalkers.

"There's really no reason to have public access to these records at all I think this is a safety bill that protects women in particular and I think it will do very well here."

Under the bill, only the name of the person with a permit could be released.

The information would still be accessible to officials such as District Attorneys, law enforcement and courts.
