Prison inmates will fill more than 1,700 beds at the new California Correctional Health Care Facility starting in July.  That translates to 2,400 jobs.

"The medical facility alone is going to have a payroll of $220 million a year - professional level jobs that should be shot in the arm for the economy in San Joaquin County," says Bill Sessa of the Department of Corrections.

San Joaquin County has had an unemployment rate as high as 17 percent.  John Solis of San Joaquin Worknet, which trains people for employment, says the facility will have a ripple effect.  "You have the secondary suppliers , people that provide goods and services to that facility, that are also going to create employment opportunities."

The state is now taking applications.
