Sacramento Co. Official: Federal Budget Uncertainties Trickle Down

Dr. Sherri Z. Heller is Director of Sacramento County Health and Human Services.

HELLER: "What really frustrates me, and what alarms me is that the Congress and the President can't seem to decide on a policy and stick to it, so that we can plan. We can plan to move resources around and protect the community from the impact of these cuts if we know what's going to happen, I just wish they'd decide and stick to it."

Heller says the county is likely to see "very noticeable" cuts to health and human services starting this July.

That will include reductions to mental health care, drug and alcohol programs and child protection services.

Heller says there may also be ripple effects because of cuts to other public programs.

HELLER: "We know that when people lose access to housing, they present with mental health difficulties. We know that when people lose access to day care, they lose their jobs, and then they apply for nutrition assistance."

Heller spoke on Capital Public Radio's Insight program.
