The data show the Sacramento area added 11,800 jobs between January 2012 and this past January.
"The 11,800 job gain is the largest year-over gain since 2006."
Heather Chamizo is with the state Employment Development
Department which released the numbers.
In January, the unemployment rate for the four-county
Sacramento area was 10.3%, an increase of a half percent from
December. Most of the job losses were in retail which shrunk by
3,900 jobs. Chamizo says that's not a surprise since retailers
don't need as many workers after the holidays.
"Retail trade was the biggest loser for the month but they
were also the biggest gainer for the year-over. So it actually
shows that even though we have some seasonality, we have had some
growth overall."
Year-over-year, retail gained 3,300 jobs.
Other sectors that added jobs in the past year include: trade,
transportation and utilities; professional and business services;
and health care.
