Sacramento is overpopulated with Chihuahuas. Animal rescue groups blame pop culture…

But local shelters have been filling up with the animals because people who adopt them are changing their minds.

"Chihuahuas love their people but don't necessarily love all people and Chihuahuas aren't the right dog for everyone."

Lesley Kirrene is with the Sacramento SPCA. The group is working with Sacramento city and county animal care services and the Wings of Rescue organization to fly 15 to 18 small dogs out of Sacramento Executive Airport to Idaho this Friday.

"This has been a great partnership with the shelter in Idaho. They don't have the overpopulation of Chihuahuas as we do here in the Sacramento area and they're happy to get them."

Money for the flight comes from the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project. Since last September, 1,000 dogs have been flown out of Sacramento to other shelters in Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
