Council Approves Relaxed Zoning Codes

The City of Sacramento wants to change its reputation of being unfriendly to building developers.

Last night, the City Council voted seven-to-one…approving new zoning code revisions streamlining the bureaucracy. That includes getting rid of a provision allowing council members to hold hearings on development projects.

Councilwoman Angelique Ashby doesn't like that part of the new code…and was the only dissenting vote.

"I believe that the removal or deterioration of the council and mayor's ability to call up projects, meaning call for secondary review in our individual districts, is a degradation of our abilities to actually speak for our constituents."

Other changes to the zoning code include: increasing the size of projects that can get an expedited review and allowing taller buildings and greater densities in commercial zones.

City planning officials say the hearing process is intact so opponents of any project will still have a voice.

The revised codes will go into effect in the fall.
