A little more than 580,000 square feet of the almond plant now has energy-efficient LED lighting equipped with motion detectors.

An upgraded cold storage system allows managers to shut down refrigeration and coast through periods of high electrical demand.

The projects are expected to save Blue Diamond more than a million dollars over five years.

SMUD's incentive program helped pay for nearly half of the 960,000 dollar project.

Michael Picker is with SMUD's Board of Directors.

"For us, the lighting, the industrial chillers, allow us to avoid building new power plants, which are expensive, complicated, require lots of maintenance and age out."

The energy-saving measures reduce utility costs by nine percent and greenhouse gas emissions equal to removing 1200 cars from the roads.
