Upon his return from Wednesday's NBA meeting in Dallas, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson talked about how the deal and the construction of an arena would "change this community", affect his legacy, and ease some of the pain brought on by his greatest professional disappointment.

"In 1993, I was in the NBA Finals," he said. "That's 20 years ago and we came up short against the Chicago Bulls.  And if we pull this off, which I think we have a great chance of doing, it might make up for coming up a little bit short -saving the team and being part of a group that fought to keep the team here in Sacramento is a big deal for all of us."

After smiling and waving at fans who greeted his flight, the Mayor proclaimed,  "This Deal is Done.  This is going to be close to be signed in the next day or two.  It's very clear from the Commissioner."

NBA Commissioner David Stern said at Wednesday's Board of Governors' meeting he hoped there would be an agreement within 48 hours.

He says he is not concerned by George Maloof's statements that Maloof was willing to work with Sacramento, but was still loyal to Seattle investor Chris Hansen.

"I can tell you Vivek and the Maloofs have been great," the Mayor said. "They're working every available hour to try to get this thing resolved.  I have the utmost confidence that we'll get it done."

While the Mayor is supremely confident, it was just February of last year he had a hand-shake deal with the Maloof family to build an arena downtown -an agreement the Maloofs backed out of six weeks later.

Chris Hansen might still become a part owner of the Kings.  His bid for a seven-percent share of the team has been approved by a bankruptcy court judge.
