Troubled Schools/Plant Breakthrough/Downloads/Basketball

Schools in Trouble More than 100 California school districts are now on a "fiscal early warning list." That means the California Department of Education is concerned about the state of the districts' budgets. Nineteen of those school districts are in the Sacramento region. What does it mean to be on the fiscal early warning list? What do districts on the list have to do to get off? And what if they don't make it? Today on Insight, we'll talk with the superintendent of one of those districts about what's going on.

Plant Breakthrough It was a chance observation in a UC Davis laboratory that could have been considered a mistake, but it led to an important discovery in the science of plant breeding. The result is a better way of producing plants with genetic material from just one of their parents.

Digital Downloads For hundreds of years, libraries have put books on shelves for people to borrow. In recent years, they added tapes and disks, but the system was the same. Of course, more and more people download digital media which you can never find on a shelf. How are libraries dealing with this? In Yolo County, they've signed on and libraries now offer downloadable media. How does that work? What does this mean for future of libraries?

Basketball Champs There was a stunning victory in California high school sports last weekend. The girls' basketball team at Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills beat a national powerhouse in the Division One Championship. Long Beach Poly, a huge school with a strong sports tradition, was playing for its fifth consecutive champioship, but Oak Ridge, led by guard Sara James, easily won 55 to 42. We'll talk with coach Steve White and player Sara James about it.
