Micro-finance Grassroots development in the developing world is the topic of a forum later today in Sacramento. One of the speakers is an official of the World Bank. She's Dr. Nilufar Ahmad, Senior Gender Specialist in the World Bank's Social Development Department. She's a citizen of Bangladesh with a long history of working on poverty, both at the World Bank and with non-profit groups.
Stand-up Economist Economics has long been nicknamed "the dismal science," but that doesn't mean economists are all down in the dumps. In fact, one economist is also a stand-up comedian, and he's in town to give a show today. He's Yoram Bauman, an environmental economist who teaches at the University of Washington and elsewhere in Seattle. You'll meet him and hear about his work.
Slam Poetry There's a youth poetry slam contest this weekend at the Mondavi Center. Hundreds of middle and high school students are expected to compete. The six top finishers will represent the Sacramento area at an international youth poetry slam festival in Los Angeles this summer.
