Insight: New Non-Profit / Dinosaur Research / Pablo Ziegler / SacPress

Earthquake Engineer A local engineer with earthquake expertise has started a non-profit to help people displaced by disaster. We'll talk about this with Kit Miyamoto of Miyamoto International who was in Japan during and after their big earthquake. We'll also find out about soil liquefaction and how engineers can mitigate for it in earthquake zones.

Dr. Kit Miyamoto will give a special presentation at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 27th about failures and successes in the 2011 Tohoku Japan Earthquake at the inaugural event for his new non-profit, Miyamoto Global Disaster Relief. A social hour begins at 5 p.m. at the Historic Elks Tower, 921 11th St., Sacramento.

SacPress We begin a new signature segment looking at local issues in the news with David Watts Barton, Editor-in-Chief of SacramentoPress.com. This week's topics include the surprising drop in homelessness in Sacraemnto.

Pablo Ziegler Grammy-winning pianist Pablo Ziegler is performing in Davis this week. He began his career playing classical and jazz before joining Astor Piazzolla's New Tango Quintet in 1978. We'll talk with him about his work and hear some of his music.

Pablo Ziegler performs at 8 p.m. Friday, April 29th in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center in Davis. Information: (866) 754-ARTS.

Dinosaur Research New research out of UC Davis suggests that some dinosaurs hunted by night, overturning conventional wisdom that dinosaurs were only active by day. We'll talk about it with Prof. Ryosuke Motani of the UC Davis Geology Department and Postdoctoral Researcher Lar Schmitz, who is also a former graduate student of Prof. Motani.
