Insight: Live Animal Birthing Exhibit / Live Birth Critic / "Craving Earth" / Terry Hanck

Live Animal Birth Exhibit The California State Fair's live birthing exhibit received national media attention last year when emergency responders shot a pregnant cow that had escaped its enclosure.  Now, the animal rights groups are calling for the state fair to end its exhibition of live animal births for fair goers.  We went to the state fair's livestock nursery to speak with, Dr. Joan Dean Rowe, a UC Davis veterinarian that oversees the parturition exhibit.

Live Birth Critic The Humane Society is one of the main critics of the live birth exhibit at the California State Fair.  We'll speak with, Dr. Barbara Hodges, a Sacramento Area veterinarian and member of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association. Read their stance on live birthing here.

Craving Earth Medical researcher and author Sera Young talks to us about her new book "Craving Earth," which explores women's cravings to eat clay and dirt during pregnancy.  Young's other writings also examine PICA, people's compulsion to eat non-food items such as ice, chalk and clay.

Terry Hanck Blues artist Terry Hanck has just released his newest CD "Look Out," and he's also headlining the Blues and Brews Stage at the California State Fair every night. He'll join us live in our studio and we'll hear some of his music, including the fair favorite "Deep Fried Twinkies."
