Insight: Local Congressional Leaders on the Debt Ceiling / Sacramento's Homeland Security Grant / Stray Bullet Study / "Dark Knowledge"

Local Representatives on the Debt Ceiling Republicans and Democrats reached a last-minute compromise to raise the federal debt ceiling and cut spending. Local Republican Assemblyman Tom McClintock voted "No" on the final deal.  Local Democrat Assemblyman John Garamendi voted "Yes." We'll talk with Tom McClintock and John Garamendi to figure out why each voted the way they did, and what their vote will mean for their constituents.

Police Grant The Sacramento Police Department is losing more than $3 million in emergency preparedness tools, including mobile command posts and terrorism response training.  Sacramento is just one of 34 cities that will lose money from the Urban Area Security Initiative Grant, funded by Homeland Security.  We'll talk with Police Chief Rick Braziel about how this additional cut in funding will affect a police department already straining under budget cuts.

Stray Bullet Study Professor of emergency medicine and director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis School of Medicine and Medical Center, Garen Wintemute, has just published a letter   in the August 3rd issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. His research finds that "unlike the risk pattern for violence, which most frequently affects young men, most persons struck by stray bullets were outside the 15 to 34 age range, and more than 40 percent were females."

Dark Knowledge "Dark Knowledge" is a book focused on answering one question: Why was Jesus Christ executed?  Davis author and retired physician, Dr. Kenneth Low, says "many issues are too emotionally charged to be discussed, such as religion. This book brings clarity by drawing a distinction between a rational idea and an emotional truth." Low draws a controversial conclusion for the reason Christ was executed.
