Geographical Disparities In Medical Treatment
Sacramento is the model for a new collaboration between San
Francisco hospitals and insurance provider Blue Shield, which is
intended to rein in the high variation of patient care between
hospitals. Joining us to talk about the sometimes extreme
variations of patient care from hospital to hospital is
Emily Bazar, a reporter for the Center for Health Reporting who
has recently published a two-part series in the San Francisco
Chronicle about geographical disparities in medical treatment and
what is being done to solve this problem. We'll also speak
with a representative of Blue Shield, who can tell us how the
collaboration works.
Sacramento Steampunk A tongue-in-cheek
variant of cyberpunk, steampunk is a sub-genre of culture and music
that draws its inspiration from steam-era science fiction authors
and artists like Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and Mary Shelley.
We'll talk to a member of the Sacramento Steampunk Society
about the latest steampunk event: The Great Basin Costume Society: The Victorian
Steampunk Ball, which is happening this Saturday at the Piper's
Opera House in Virginia City.
Catriona McPherson A mystery novelist
from Scotland who lives near Davis has a new book out titled "Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Blood
Stains." (This segment originally aired August 19,
2011.)
Listen to "Man Overboard" by Puscifer; a
steampunk style song.
