Vaccination Exemption
Sacramento Assemblyman and former pediatrician Dr. Richard
Pan has authored legislation that will make it harder for a parent
to keep his or her child from being vaccinated. Under current
law a parent can enroll his or her child in a public school without
being vaccinated if he or she files a "personal belief
exemption." Assembly Bill 2109 will require a parent or
guardian seeking a "personal belief exemption" to get the signature
of a licensed health care practitioner who says the parent or
guardian was informed of the benefits and risks of the immunization
before opting out of vaccinations. We'll also speak with
Dr. Jay Gordon who is against the bill. For more information

California and the Civil War
Two Grass Valley novelists have a new book about California
during the Civil War. Richard Hurley and TJ Meekins' novel,
"Queen of the Northern Mines - a Novel of the Civil
War in California", is set in Nevada County in 1860-63.
The book imagines a bloody partisan war of the kind that tormented
Kansas and Missouri during the Civil War in California.
The Loom Brooklyn's "The
Loom" are gearing up to head West on tour in support of their debut
LP, "Teeth" Teeth sways from somber drones
of distortion and lonely French horn to manic layers of trumpet,
guitar fuzz, and cymbal crashes, its resonance lies in the way
these contrasts conjure the idiosyncratic personal details and
experiences, both immense and minute, of everyday life. They tell
stories of regret and renewal - of characters "doing their dishes
in the dark" even while "trying to make the days feel long" -
offsetting minor notes with major keys and tempering squall with
calm. They'll be in the Sacramento area this week to share
their music with us.
