The Origins of El Cinco de Mayo
Americans and Latinos have been celebrating Cinco de Mayo in
California for 150 years. But the day is scarcely celebrated
in Mexico. Here to clarify the origins of the holiday is UCLA Professor of
Medicine and Latino Health, David Hayes-Bautista, who will be speaking
about the "American tradition" of Cinco De Mayo at Sacramento State University Thursday, May 3 at
5:00 pm. His articles appear in Journals ranging
from Academic Medicine to Salud Pública de
México. Some of his publications include The Burden
of Support: Young Latinos in an Aging Society, and La
Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State. His most
recent book El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition
is published by U.C. Press.

A Thousand Kisses Deep Leonard
Cohen is one of the few musical figures of this era who
commands as much respect now as he did in the sixties. To
commemorate the living legend, once a year, fourteen musicians
assemble to recreate the instrumentation of Cohen's most recent
touring band with woodwinds, strings, guitars, keyboards and
back-up singers. "A Thousand Kisses Deep: The Songs of Leonard
Cohen" is the creation of KVMR news director Paul Emery and
includes singers Anni McCann and Peter Wilson. The group
performs Saturday, May 5 at the Sierra 2
Center for Arts & Community in Curtis Park.
