Insight: Youth Employment / 9-Year-Old Swimmer / Teen Cycling Team / At the Ballet

Youth Employment/Summer Jobs It's graduation time for Sacramento Area high schools and colleges.  And, like clockwork, a flood of young people are trying to find varying degrees of work in a still-depressed job market.  But even if unemployment is high and the prospects of finding a well-paid job are low, there is work out there for young people. Joining us to talk about how and where a young person in Sacramento might find work are three guests who specialize in helping people find work. Justin Wehner is a Labor Market Consultant for the California Employment Development Department, Sacramento Region. Jill Stockinger is a librarian with the Sacramento Public Library who specializes in free in-person job-search programs like interviewing for a job and preparing a resume.  Suzy Murray is also a librarian with the Sacramento Public Library, but she specializes in job search services offered online through the library's website.

9-Year-Old Swimmer Jordan Freer, a 9-year-old girl from tiny Lotus, California, is the youngest girl on record to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco. She braved the 1.5-miles journey across the cold, choppy waters of San Francisco Bay on Memorial Day to raise money for the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign, which sends life-saving bed nets to protect families in Africa from malaria.

Teen Cycling Team Believe and Achieve is an all-teen cycling team competing in the Race Across America, or RAAM, as it's known in race circles.   The team is the creation of 14-year-old Connor Ellison, who completed the race two years ago as a member of an adult team.  Believe and Achieve has 12 days to make the 3,000 mile trek from the California coast to Annapolis, Maryland. The teens are also using the race to raise $150,000 to bolster awareness about organ donation and transplantation.
