Youth Employment/Summer Jobs It's graduation
time for Sacramento Area high schools and colleges. And, like
clockwork, a flood of young people are trying to find varying
degrees of work in a still-depressed job market. But even if
unemployment is high and the prospects of finding a well-paid job
are low, there is work out there for young people. Joining us to
talk about how and where a young person in Sacramento might find
work are three guests who specialize in helping people find
work. Justin Wehner is a Labor Market Consultant for the
California Employment Development Department, Sacramento Region.
Jill Stockinger is a librarian with the Sacramento Public
Library who specializes in free in-person job-search
programs like interviewing for a job and preparing a
resume. Suzy Murray is also a librarian with the
Sacramento Public Library, but she specializes in job search
services offered online through the library's

, a 9-year-old girl from tiny Lotus, California, is the
youngest girl on record to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco. She
braved the 1.5-miles journey across the cold, choppy waters of San
Francisco Bay on Memorial Day to raise money for the United Nations
Foundation's Nothing But Nets
campaign, which sends
life-saving bed nets to protect families in Africa from
Teen Cycling Team Believe and
is an all-teen cycling team competing in the Race
Across America, or RAAM, as it's known in race circles.
The team is the creation of 14-year-old Connor Ellison, who
completed the race two years ago as a member of an adult
team. Believe and Achieve has 12 days to make the 3,000 mile
trek from the California coast to Annapolis, Maryland. The teens
are also using the race to raise $150,000 to bolster awareness
about organ donation and transplantation.
At the Ballet III: Can't Touch This
started as the senior project for former Natomas High School
student Alex Stewart
has become a much anticipated
annual production and fundraiser for the Sacramento
. "At the Ballet"
is a comedy musical revue
similar to something you'd see on Saturday Night Live or at the
Second-City. The creator, Stewart, is now in college
and "At the Ballet" is now in its third year, but the production is
still student run. "At the Ballet III: Can't Touch This" runs
through June 17 at the Sacramento Ballet studio.
